ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM

by Advantage Learning Systems

Students in grades 2 - 12 participate in the Accelerated Reader Program.

GOALS:

Students will develop a life-long love of reading while improving their reading level and comprehension.

INCENTIVES:

Each Friday, the AR Point Store is open for students to "spend" their points on a variety of prizes and privileges. The number of points required for each purchase varies according to the grade level of the student.

At the end of each school year students earning a specified number of points visit Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lexington, Kentucky.

1996-97 School-wide incentive: If the entire student body earned 4500 points, Principal Charles Griffith would kiss a pig. If they earned 5000 points, Library Media Specialist Beth Neihof would also kiss the pig. PROBLEM! We couldn't locate the little porker, so teacher and pet store owner Liz Ingram volunteered an iguana.

1997-98 School-wide incentive: If the entire student body passed 2500 tests, Principal Tim Spencer would read a Dr. Seuss book from the roof of the library. They did it, and so did he! The reading was held on a very cold and windy March 2nd, Dr. Seuss's birthday.
